It’s called black gums or gum hyperpigmentation, and though it may not be very well-known, hundreds of thousands of people suffer from this condition every year. As the name suggests, the most common symptom is dark black spots or blotches on the gums. On rare occasions…

Gum Hyperpigmentation (Black Gums) Is More Common Than You Think
Although dark gums are not life-threatening, they should be taken seriously. People with untreated gum hyperpigmentation can be at an increased risk for things such as cavities and gum disease, so it’s important to treat the condition. More alarming than those diseases is the potential for skin cancer, which can develop on dark gums if left untreated. If you have black gums or hyperpigmentation on your mouth, lips or in other areas of your face, it’s important to see a doctor. The doctor will take skin biopsy samples from affected areas to make sure that it is indeed black pigmentation.

What Causes Black Gums?

Some people have dark gums for unknown reasons, but there are many potential causes. Dental work or teeth grinding can cause teeth to rub together, which may irritate or harm the tissues of the gum. Some food dyes in foods and drinks can also stain the gums black. Periodontal disease can contribute to discoloration, as it causes pockets of bacteria and gum tissue breakdown which leads to dark patches in the mouth. And finally, some medications such as anti-depressants may also cause black blotches on gums.

How To Get Rid Of Black Gums?

The first and most important thing you need to do if your teeth are black is to schedule an appointment with your dentist. They will usually be able to diagnose the problem fairly quickly and prescribe treatment that can get rid of the black in no time. However, they may not be available at all times. Luckily, there are some things you can do to remove any traces of dark gums without relying on a dentist…

How To Prevent Black Gums In The Future?

Fortunately, there are ways to prevent black gums from occurring in the future. The first and most important thing is to make sure your teeth are clean. Brushing twice per day and using fluoride toothpaste can help keep your mouth clean. Along with brushing, regular flossing is important too. Brushing will remove food particles that would otherwise decay and cause discoloration of your gum tissue. Flossing will get rid of the plaque buildup on the surface layer of your teeth that causes bacteria to enter and destroy the deeper layers of your gum tissue.
