Endometriosis And How It Causes Infertility

What is Endometriosis? How does it cause infertility? If you are looking for answers, then you are right where you are supposed to be. Endometriosis is an underlying condition where tissues present in the lining of the uterus start growing in other regions of the body or the abdomen and pelvic area. Endometriosis causes disturbing pain and causes disturbance in a person’s everyday life. It can cause an irregular menstrual cycle and extensive pain during periods. It can also cause excessive bleeding during periods and can also lead to infertility. Endometriosis can occur in different regions of the body like ovaries, vagina, bladder and ureters, fallopian tube, outside the uterus, or intestines.

Cause Of Endometriosis

The cause of this underlying disease is still unknown. However when endometriosis occurs it causes immense pain as the tissues present in the wall of the uterus start growing in other places of the body and cause adhesions or scar tissue, these tissues fuse with other organs and cause immense discomfort and pain. However we can assume a few reasons that might cause endometriosis, they are:-

  1. Transportation of Endometrial cell

The endometrial cells can be transported to different parts of the body through blood vessels and tissue fluids. This might cause the tissues to grow in unwanted regions and cause immense discomfort and pain.

  1. Transformation of Embryonic cell

Ovaries produce hormones known as estrogen might be the reason for the transformation of an embryonic cell into an endometrial cell in the early stages of cell development.

  1. Retrograde menstruation

It is an underlying condition where the menstrual blood starts flowing upwards toward the fallopian tube and into the pelvis instead of the vagina. This may cause the transportation of endometrial cells into the different regions of the body.

  1. Immune system disorder

Due to an immune system disorder, the body might be unable to recognize the presence of endometrial cells and hence promoting the transportation of endometrial cells in different regions, causing the disease.

  1. Peritoneal cell transformation

It is also known as the “Induction theory” by a number of experts, they believe that certain hormones and immune factors are the reason behind the transformation of peritoneal cells into endometrial cells

How Does It Cause Infertility

Infertility due to endometriosis occurs when the cell lining in the uterus starts growing in the fallopian tube and inhibits the sperm cell to be transported to the egg cell. This can also cause the formation of scar tissues that makes it more difficult to conceive a baby. Endometriosis can cause infertility only if it is extensive whereas intensive endometriosis has a lesser chance to cause infertility.

The cause of endometriosis is still unknown but the symptoms include immense pain during the menstrual cycle, excessive bleeding during periods, pain during sex, and also sometimes infertility. However, major improvement in the field of science has led to easy diagnosis and cure of this underlying disease. Introduction to ART has led many people to conceive a child regardless of infertility. Infertility can be treated with many procedures such as artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization.
